Stoke Mandeville is a civil parish located in the Vale of Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire. Three miles from Aylesbury and about the same distance from Wendover, it is situated on the London to Aylesbury Line between Aylesbury Station and Wendover Station.
The village was originally called Stoches, and “Mandeville'' was added to its name in 1284. A couple of the village’s characteristic red brick houses date from the 18th century. At Stoke House, one such 18th-century building and currently a farmhouse, parts of a moat are still visible.
The centuries-old church of St Mary’s the Virgin was demolished in 1966. After an archaeological exploration on the grounds uncovering artefacts of more than 1,000 years old, a museum was recently founded here. The newer St. Mary the Virgin, the Stoke Mandeville Methodist Church in Eskdale Road, and St Nicholas Church in Risborough Road are the remaining churches in the village.
