Hatfield is a town and civil parish in Hertfordshire that falls within the Welwyn Hatfield borough. The town grew as a post-war New Town built almost entirely from scratch after the Second World War to resolve the urgent housing shortage.
As a New Town, Hatfield developed around the historic Hatfield House. The iconic mansion was built in 1611 by Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury and Chief Minister to King James the First. Queen Elizabeth I spent part of her childhood here, and some of her personal items are still inside the mansion. In the garden, a striking oak tree stands where Queen Elizabeth I stood when she first learnt that she would become queen in 1558.
The town has seen a steady increase in commuters working in London moving to Hatfield. Hatfield is about 20 miles north of London via the A1(M) motorway and has direct rail links to London King's Cross, Finsbury Park and Moorgate.
Hatfield has a long history with the aeroplane industry, with the de Havilland airfield and aircraft factory opening in 1930. Many famous planes came out of the various producers, but it bade farewell to its “wings” in 1993. The heritage will never be forgotten, thanks to Hatfield's names on certain streets and pubs. Comet Way, The Airfield, Dragon Road and The Harrier Pub can all be linked to the aeroplane industry in Hatfield.
Thinking of studying in Hatfield? The University of Hertfordshire, one of the UK's top universities, is located in Hatfield. Fun fact: Ed Sheeran's music video for Lego House was filmed at the university in 2011. The music video starring Rupert Grint included students from the university.
As a popular student town, Hatfield naturally has many great places to eat and drink. The Red Lion on Great North Road is a local favourite, as is the Sibthorpe Arms set in the heart of Welham Green on 9 Station Road, North Mymms.
