Caerphilly is located approximately 7 miles north of Cardiff. Famous for its cheese and castle, the town of Caerphilly dates back hundreds of years. It was originally a Celtic settlement before being conquered by the Romans and later the Normans. Caerphilly Castle was completed in 1271 by Anglo-Norman nobel Gilbert de Clare to subdue the local Welsh lords. Second only to Windsor, Caerphilly Castle is one of the biggest castles in the UK and forms the center of the town of Caerphilly. The castle was constructed as part of a campaign to maintain control of Glamorgan. Gilbert and his descendants fought for years against the native Welsh rulers. The castle has probably seen more siege attempts than any other in the UK. Caerphilly castle is surrounded by an extensive artificial lake and is considered by historian Allen Brown to be "the most elaborate water defences in all Britain". The Caerphilly Castle is also noted as the first example of concentric castle defences in the UK and is potentially what enabled the Castle to weather so many attempted sieges. 

Modern Caerphilly is a much brighter and happier place than its battle hardened heritage might suggest. While the Castle still forms the town center and is perhaps its most popular sight, there are many other attractions to Caerphilly that make it one of the most visited towns in south Wales. The amazingly large horse hill was constructed to cover up an old coal pit after the Caerphilly coal industry closed. The sculpture has become so popular that Parc Penallta has become commonly referred to as ‘the place with the horse’.
